GEORGE DUKE: SHINE ON - THE ANTHOLOGY - THE EPIC YEARS (SMCR-5140D)

GEORGE DUKE: SHINE ON – THE ANTHOLOGY – THE EPIC YEARS (SMCR-5140D)

Acknowledged as one of the most talented multi-faceted music men of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond, California-born George’s career began working with a diverse range of musicians including such pioneers as Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa before he started his own solo recording journey in the mid-’70s. Within a year of George’s impressive stint with Epic, he enjoyed a first U.S. chart breakthrough with 1977’s ‘Reach For It’, continuing with the funk classic, ‘Dukey Stick’ in 1978. George’s acclaimed 1979 project’Brazilian Love Affair’ spawned a UK charted hit with the title track. Further success came with his teaming with super-bassist Stanley Clarke resulting in George’s biggest U.S. hit, 1981’s ‘Sweet Baby’. Compiled by David Nathan, this sumptuous 2-cd follows the SoulMusic Records’ reissues of several of George’s best-selling Epic albums; stellar notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring include quotes from Duke cohorts Ndugu Chancler and Byron Miller and his cousin, Dianne Reeves; great remastering by James Bragg highlights the distinctive funk/jazz & R&B work

  • SoulMusic Records is proud to present an expanded edition of I’M READY, the sole album recorded by the late and legendary Natalie Cole for Epic Records. The original eight-track 1983 album is supplemented by four cuts produced by famed musician Stanley Clarke which remained in the vaults until they were included in a ‘90s U.S. reissue of the original LP.
  • Following her hit-filled tenure with Capitol Records (1975-1982), Natalie’s move to Epic came among personal challenges (outlined in her 2000 memoirs). Nonetheless, I’M READY saw her reunited with the team of Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy who had helmed her ‘70s string of award-winning best-selling singles and album for five tracks including “Too Much Mister,” a Top US R&B hit.  Multi-talented music man Stanley Clarke produced three tracks, co-producing one with a member of Natalie’s band, Chuck Bynum.
  • Natalie (who sadly passed away on December 31, 2015) wrote two songs – “I’m Your Mirror” and the bonus cut “How Can You Stop” – as well as co-writing two more with her brother Eddie Cole, and “Winner (Takes All)” and “Movin’ On,” which were also part of the Stanley Clarke sessions.
  • Remastered by Nick Robbins, this 2016 SoulMusic Records reissue follows the label’s release of two other Cole classics, “Natalie…Live!” (SMCR-5009) and “Thankful,” an expanded edition (SMCR-5028) and includes insightful notes by renowned U.S. writer Justin Kantor and a personal tribute to Natalie by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan, who began interviewing her in 1975.

• From 1973 to 1981, the brothers Tavares – Ralph, Feliciano (“Butch”) Arthur (“Pooch”) Antone (Chubby) and Perry (Tiny) – recorded a treasure trove of great albums and singles for Capitol Records. In 1975, the group enjoyed its first breakthrough hit with “It Only Takes A Minute”; in 1976, the timeless classic “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” became the team’s first global smash followed by “Don’t Take Away The Music” also became an international dance music/pop and R&B chartmaker. In 1977, the Bee Gees-penned “More Than A Woman” (from the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ soundtrack) catapulted Tavares back into the worldwide charts as did “Whodunit.”

• Remastered by Donald Cleveland, this 2016 release follows the label’s reissue of seven Capitol albums by the group – Love Storm (SMCR-5127), Hard Core Poetry (SMCR-5097), Love Uprising (SMCR-5065), Madam Butterly (SMCR-5064), Supercharged (SMCR–5045), Sky-High! Caroline International, in association with SoulMusic Records, is proud to announce the reissue of WE GOT TO GET OUR THING TOGETHER and NO WAY BACK, two classic ‘70s albums by legendary group The Dells, the first album available for the first time on CD worldwide and the second only available as a limited edition Japanese reissue.

The Dells have long been revered in the world of soul music with a career that spanned an incredible five decades (1952-2012).  Originally formed in Harvey, Illinois just miles outside of Chicago, the quintet (who only ever underwent one personnel change) came to US national prominence in 1956 with “Oh What A Nite”; however it was their tenure with Chess Records from the mid-‘60s to the late ‘70s that earned the group the title ‘the mighty, mighty Dells’ as a result of their dynamic performances and a legacy of hit singles (such as “Stay In My Corner,” a revamp of “Oh What A Night” and in the early ‘70s, “Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation” and “The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind),” one of the key cuts on the 1971 LP “Freedom Means,” reissued by Caroline International in association with SoulMusic Records in 2015).

The 1975 album WE GOT TO GET OUR THING TOGETHER (briefly issued on Cadet Records) became the group’s debut set for Mercury Records, with the majority of production by Detroit-based hitmaker Don Davis (known for his work with Johnnie Taylor and The Dramatics in particular) including the standout “Love Is Missing From Our Lives,” recorded with The Dramatics. The follow up 1976 set, NO WAY BACK included tracks used for the blaxploitation film of the same name (starring Fred Williamson), recorded primarily with another Detroit producer/songwriter Mike Terry.

Both albums have been long treasured by loyal and steadfast fans of the group; this reissue, produced by David Nathan of SoulMusic Records, is  remastered from original tapes by Donald Cleveland and features notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring and includes quotes from group member Chuck Barksdale specifically for this reissue.
