• SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “I Try: The Anthology, 1978-1993,” a 2-CD set of charted singles, key album cuts and guest appearances from the inimitable singer/songwriter Angela Bofill, spanning the most prominent period of her recoding career.

• A native New Yorker, Angela became the second artist signed to GRP Records, formed by producers Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen in 1978: her debut LP, Angie heralded the arrival of one of the mainstay ‘voices’ in the burgeoning ‘quiet storm’ radio format in the US thanks for tracks like “Under The Moon And Over The Sky” and “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter,” the first of a dozen charted singles included on this first-of-its-kind anthology of Angela’s much-loved work.

• Angela’s sophomore album, Angel Of The Night proved even more successful thanks to the title track and the now-timeless classic “I Try,” both staples of Angela’s live repertoire. Switching to Arista Records in 1981, Angela began working with label chief Clive Davis, resulting in another five best-selling albums from which came her biggest charted hits, including “Too Tough” and “Tonight I Give In.”

• This sumptuous 2-CD lovingly compiled by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan (who began conducting interviews with Angela after the release of her debut LP) includes a number of rare tracks such as “All The Reasons Why,” “Love & Marriage,” “Love Light” and “Rhythm Of Your Mind,” all of which were first released between 2002-2007. In addition, the anthology features five stellar guest appearances with artists such as Narada Michael Walden (who produced three of Angie’s Arista albums), Johnny Mathis, Carl Anderson, Stanley Clarke, Marian Meadows and Kirk Whalum; and tracks from Angela’s one-off 1993 LP for Jive Records including the title track, I Wanna Love Somebody.

• The superb music on this anthology (with project assistance from Toney Redmond, Angela’s former manager) is augmented by stellar liner notes from renowned US writer, A. Scott Galloway who has included extensive quotes from Angela herself along with comments by producers, songwriters and musicians including Walden, Mic Murphy & David Frank, Preston Glass, Kirk Whalum, Buddy Williams, Eve Nelson, Derek Bramble and others.

• As ‘The First Lady Of Solar (Sound Of Los Angeles Records),’ California-born Carrie Lucas forged a recording career starting in 1977 that helped establish the Los Angeles-based company formed by her husband, pioneering music industry executive Dick Griffey into a world-renowned label that launched internationally successful artists such as Shalamar, The Whispers, Klymaxx, Midnight Star, Lakeside, The Deele and Dynasty. With a stellar cadre of top musicians, a growing stable of songwriters and emergent producers, the distinctive sound that became associated with the company was in full effect on the six albums that Carrie recorded between 1977-1984.

• Carrie’s success as a chartmaker began when husband Griffey and Don Cornelius, the renowned creator and host of the popular US television series, ‘Soul Train’ started Soul Train Records in 1977: her first single, “I Gotta Keep Dancin’” became a US R&B, pop and dance hit and paved the way for a further six charted singles including “Dance With You,” also a UK Top 40 entry; 1982’s “Show Me Where You’re Coming From” ; and her 1984 revival of the Barbara Lewis classic, “Hello Stranger,” featuring labelmates The Whispers, with whom Carrie toured alongside other Solar artists in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. . Producers including Leon Sylvers III, members of The Whispers and Lakeside, Klymaxx’ Fenderella and Dick Griffey himself contributed to the 47 tracks featured here (including the almost-eight minute long 12” version of 1980’s “Keep Smiling.”

• This first-of-its-kind 3-CD collection of Carrie’s six albums showcases not only her status as one of the prominent dance music purveyors (via tracks such as “Career Girl,” “Fashion” and “It’s Not What You Got (It’s How You Use It)” during a time period when the ‘disco’ movement was in its ascendancy but her interpretative skills as a balladeer on songs such as “Tender,” “Still In Love,” “Lovin’ Is On My Mind,” “I’ll Close The Door” and “Just A Memory” ; and as an accomplished songwriter, penning and collaborating on a number of key tracks including “Simpler Days,” “What’s The Question” and “Reflections.”

• Liner notes by SoulMusic Records and SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan include commentary by Carrie herself along with a special quote from her daughter Carolyn Griffey (who now tours globally with Shalamar); first class mastering by Nick Robbins; and stellar artwork from Roger Williams.

• This 2018 reissue is particular timely given the release of Carrie’s first new recording in many years on the UK-relaunched Solar label.

Previously a singer and musician with the rock outfit, The Edgar Winter Group, Dan began his solo journey as a recording artist in 1976; when his debut LP didn’t enjoy sales success, Dan switched his focus to the world of dance music at a time when disco was emerging as a dominant musical genre globally.

Tracks from the LP (released just a few months later in 1978) such as the medley of Countdown and This Is It and the title track topped Billboard’s Dance Music/Club Play Chart.

  • SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “A Beautiful Friendship: The Kudu Anthology, 1971-1976,” a 2-CD homage to the late, great Esther Phillips drawn from the most productive and successful period of her three-and-a-half decades-long career, the five years she spent with Kudu Records, an imprint of the legendary CTI label.
  • Although her career began as a teenager (known as Little Esther) with the famed Johnny Otis band in 1950, it was as a multi-genre song stylist from the ‘60s to the ‘80s that Esther, with her distinctive and unique vocal style, is best remembered by soul, R&B, jazz and dance music lovers the world over.
  • Following her 1962 US hit “Release Me,” Esther spent three years with Atlantic before a stint in rehab after which she recorded briefly with Roulette Records before rejoining Atlantic for one album. Esther’s union with Kudu, created by jazz veteran Creed Taylor  resulted in seven albums which form the basis for this sumptuous musically rich 2-CD set, lovingly created by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan who interviewed Esther several times during the ‘70s.
  • Highlights include Esther’s bitingly honest reading of Gil Scott-Heron’s “Home Is Where The Hatred Is,” which she considered one of the most challenging songs to record, given her own history with drug addiction. The track has been frequently sampled and remains one of the most amazing performances Esther gave on record.
  • Esther’s Kudu charted singles – from her 1975 globally successful disco-slanted revival of Dinah Washington’s “What A Diff’rence A Day Makes” to covers of The Originals’ 1969 Motown hit, “Baby, I’m For Real” and Eddie Floyd’s gender-switched “I’ve Never Found A Man (To Love Me Like You Do” are also featured along with two rare live recordings from a 1972 appearance at a CTI All-Stars concert at The Hollywood Bowl along with five tracks from Esther’s classic 1973 “Black-Eyed Blues” LP, recorded with former members of King Crimson are among other standouts.  Extensive notes by Nathan include quotes from rock organist Tim Hinkley (who played on the album sessions) and from ‘70s interviews with Esther herself.

  • In 1964, The Staple Singers signed with Epic Records after leaving Jazz/Blues/Folk label Riverside Records. From then until the middle of 1968, they recorded six albums for the label, all of which are featured in this 3CD box.
  • Three of these classic albums, “Pray On”, “For What It’s Worth” and “What The World Needs Now Is Love”, are making their CD debut and this now makes virtually all of their recorded work available on CD.
  • During the years with Epic, The Staple Singers’ sound developed into the Soul/Folk sub-genre that came to a commercial peak at Stax Records during the 1970s.
  • This 65-track box set is the first-ever retrospective of their Epic years and features songs by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Burt Bacharach and Hal David as well as numerous original compositions by Pop Staples. His original song, ‘Why (Am I Treated So Bad)’, has become a soul standard.
  • Despite their newly-found commercial success, the group did not leave any of their gospel roots behind. All of the songs that are not gospel standards are imbued with a message of hope and inspiration, fully in keeping with their Christian music roots.
  • Mavis Staples is featured on lead vocals on the majority of tracks but there are also several vocals from Pops Staples and his blues-drenched guitar gets much exposure too. Pervis Staples can be heard on three recitations with Bob Dylan’s ‘John Brown’, which are especially notable.
  • Mavis Staples is the only member of the family still active and regularly touring the world, keeping The Staples Singers legacy alive. Pervis has been long retired and Pops, Yvonne and Cleotha have all passed away.
  • SoulMusic Records is very proud to bring these six keenly sought-after albums back into circulation.

GEORGE DUKE: SHINE ON – THE ANTHOLOGY – THE EPIC YEARS (SMCR-5140D)

Acknowledged as one of the most talented multi-faceted music men of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond, California-born George’s career began working with a diverse range of musicians including such pioneers as Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa before he started his own solo recording journey in the mid-’70s. George’s acclaimed 1979 project’Brazilian Love Affair’ spawned a UK charted hit with the title track. Further success came with his teaming with super-bassist Stanley Clarke resulting in George’s biggest U.S. hit, 1981’s ‘Sweet Baby’. Compiled by David Nathan, this sumptuous 2-cd follows the SoulMusic Records’ reissues of several of George’s best-selling Epic albums; stellar notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring include quotes from Duke cohorts Ndugu Chancler and Byron Miller and his cousin, Dianne Reeves; great remastering by James Bragg highlights the distinctive funk/jazz & R&B work

  • SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “The Solo Collection,” a first-ever 2-CD set of the two albums recorded by the legendary Gladys Knight in the late ‘70s. Aside from two obscure ‘60s singles, Gladys’ name had never appeared as a solo performer until 1978: from the early ‘60s, with family group Gladys Knight & The Pips, she attained international recognition over a period of seventeen years. In 1973, after racking up a third No. 1 US hit with “Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)” for Motown, Gladys & The Pips joined the roster of Buddah Records scoring several hits in a row (including “Midnight Train To Georgia”).
  • In the midst of legal wrangling with the label in 1976 and 1977, Gladys recorded MISS GLADYS KNIGHT for Buddah with producers Gary Klein and the UK’s Tony Macaulay. While the now-rare 1978 LP didn’t yield any hit singles, it did contain standouts such as the dancefloor club play highlight “It’s Better Than A Good Time” and a potent medley of Randy Newman’s “Sail Away” and Allen Toussaint’s “Freedom For The Stallions.”
  • Signed as a solo artist to Columbia Records in August 1978, Gladys recorded and co-produced (with veteran producer Jack Gold) a one-off, self-titled set for the label, released in 1979. GLADYS KNIGHT contains a diverse range of material including the single “Am I Too Late” (a Top 50 US R&B hit), the Sam Dees-penned “My World” and a standout performance of  the classic “I (Who Have Nothing),” along with the dance-oriented “You Bring Out The Best In Me.”
  • This vocally superb set features both albums in their entirety including tracks issued for the first time on a 2013 CD; top grade remastering by Nick Robbins and stellar notes by renowned writer Charles Waring with quotes from Gladys.
