GEORGE DUKE: SHINE ON - THE ANTHOLOGY - THE EPIC YEARS (SMCR-5140D)

GEORGE DUKE: SHINE ON – THE ANTHOLOGY – THE EPIC YEARS (SMCR-5140D)

Acknowledged as one of the most talented multi-faceted music men of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond, California-born George’s career began working with a diverse range of musicians including such pioneers as Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa before he started his own solo recording journey in the mid-’70s. Within a year of George’s impressive stint with Epic, he enjoyed a first U.S. chart breakthrough with 1977’s ‘Reach For It’, continuing with the funk classic, ‘Dukey Stick’ in 1978. George’s acclaimed 1979 project’Brazilian Love Affair’ spawned a UK charted hit with the title track. Further success came with his teaming with super-bassist Stanley Clarke resulting in George’s biggest U.S. hit, 1981’s ‘Sweet Baby’. Compiled by David Nathan, this sumptuous 2-cd follows the SoulMusic Records’ reissues of several of George’s best-selling Epic albums; stellar notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring include quotes from Duke cohorts Ndugu Chancler and Byron Miller and his cousin, Dianne Reeves; great remastering by James Bragg highlights the distinctive funk/jazz & R&B work

ISAAC HAYES: LOVE ATTACK EXPANDED EDITION (SMCR-5138)

ISAAC HAYES: LOVE ATTACK EXPANDED EDITION (SMCR-5138)

By 1986, when Isaac signed with Columbia Records, he was coming out of a hiatus from recording; with the release of ‘U-Turn’, he faced a very different marketplace: utilizing then-new technology, Isaac scored a double-sided U.S. R&B top 10 hit single with ‘Ike’s Rap’ and ‘Hey Girl’.

He approached the follow up LP Love Attack in much the same manner and while it didn’t yield the same kind of chart success, the album contained a number of musical gems including a remake of ‘I Stand Accused’ which he’d cut for his 1970 solo debut “The Isaac Hayes Movement” ; a sexy cover of the 1975 Major Harris hit, ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait’; a version of Billy Joel’s ‘ She’s Got A Way’; and the dance-driven original ‘Showdown.’

With (5) bonus tracks including the non-LP ‘B’ side, Curious, this reissue includes stellar liner notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring and great remastering by Donald Cleveland from original Columbia tapes.

• SoulMusic Records is proud to present expanded editions of BUMP CITY and TOWER OF POWER, the first two classic albums by pioneering funk super group Tower Of Power as a 2-CD set with single versions of the hits, “You’re Still A Young Man” and “What Is Hip?”

• Founded by Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka, the Bay Area-based horn-dominated aggregation, Tower Of Power’s reputation was steadily growing (following the release of their debut set, “East Bay Grease”) when they signed with Warner Brothers Records in 1972. At that time, the band comprised Rick Stevens (lead vocals) Skip Mesquite (first tenor sax and flute), Castillo (second tenor sax), Greg Adams (trumpet, flugelhorn, French horn and piano), Kupka (baritone sax), Mic Gillete (trumpet, trombone), Willie James Fulton (guitar), David Garibaldi (drums), Francis ‘Rocco’ Prestia (bass) and Brent Byars (congas).

• BUMP CITY was recorded in Memphis, working with the legendary Steve Cropper and famed Stax engineer Ron Capone and yielded the timeless slow jam, “You’re Still A Young Man” (a US Top 30 pop and R&B hit) and key cuts such as “Down To The Nightclub” and “You Got To Funkifize.”

• The follow-up LP, 1973’s self-titled album introduced music lovers to the soulful vocals of (future solo hitmaker) Lenny Williams via the US Top 20 R&B/pop charted single, “So Very Hard To Go” and the popular funk groove, “What Is Hip?”

• This 2016 reissue includes extensive notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with quotes from band members Greg Adams and David Garibalid and great remastering by Donald Cleveland.
