DORIS TROY Ft. MYSTIC MERLIN: Whatcha Gonna Do + bonus track (SoulMusic Records/X Warner)

Doris Troy-Whatcha Gonna Do

Known to music lovers as the original recording artist and co-writer of the classic "Just One Look," R&B Foundation Pioneer Award recipient Doris Troy (1937-2004) - often known as 'Mama Soul' - primarily recorded for Atlantic Records in the '60s before working with The Beatles in the early '70s as one of the few U.S. artists signed to Apple Records.  Her voice could be heard on literally dozens of recordings by such artists as Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, George Harrison, Billy Preston and Cary Simon among others.  Doris' early years provided the inspiration for her sister Vy Higgensen's immensely popular musical, "Mama I Want To Sing!" and Doris performed for many years in the show playing the role of her own mother.

In 1979, she teamed up with longtime friend, then-music journalist David Nathan and John Simmons (at the time, musical director for Stephanie Mills and future musical director for Whitney Houston) to record two tracks aimed at the growing global disco market, "You Got Me Baby" and a remake of the Tommy Edwards' 1958 hit, "It's All In The Game."  Both tracks were released for the first time digitally via SoulMusic Records, with worldwide distribution by Warner X.

In1980, David was working with the popular group, Mystic Merlin on some of his own recordings and asked if the group would do a session with Doris. The result was a reggae’n’funk revival of Doris’ 1963 hit, “What’cha Gonna Do About It” which has never been released. SuperDiscoEdits’ founder Russell Paine completed a brand new mix of the original 1980 recording by Doris, produced by David Nathan and the result is the hypnotic “Whatcha Gonna Do,” making its debut release as a 12” single on Nefer Records through SuperDiscoEdits.

Released digitally in December 2020, the 2018 remix "Whatcha Gonna Do" is coupled with the original 1980 studio recording with Mystic Merlin of "What'cha Gonna Do About It," making its first ever release.
