  • As part of its acclaimed anthology series, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “Take Me I’m Yours – The Buddah Years,” a solid retrospective of award-winning recording artist, producer, songwriter and musician Michael Henderson’s hit-filled tenure (1976-1983) wih Buddah Records.
  • Before achieving international recognition as a stellar artist his own right, Michigan-born Michael began doing shows as a bass player with R&B favourites, The Detroit Emeralds; in the late ‘60s, a youthful Stevie Wonder invited the teenager to join his band. In Detroit, Michael played on sessions with Motown artists including The Four Tops, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Gladys Knight & The Pips and David Ruffin as well as doing shows with Aretha Franklin.
  • In 1970, during a New York gig with Wonder, jazz legend Miles Davis offered Michael a spot in his touring and recording band which lasted for five years before fellow band member Reggie Lucas introduced him to drummer Norman Connors. In 1975, Michael cut his own “Valentine Love” as a duet with Jean Carn for Connors’ “Saturday Night Special” LP and began experiencing eight years of best-selling singles and LPs.
  • The title track for Connors’ 1976 LP, “You Are My Starship” established Michael as a hitmaker in his own right and was followed by a duet with then-newcomer Phyllis Hyman (“We Both Need Each Other”). In 1976, Buddah Records released “Solid,” Michael’s first of seven albums for the label.
  • This anthology, compiled by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan, includes all of Michael’s fifteen US charted singles including the Top 5 R&B hit “Take Me I’m Yours” and the 1981 hit duet with Phyllis Hyman, “Can’t We Fall In Love Again” as well as key LP cuts such as the quiet storm gem, “At The Concert” with Roberta Flack and “Treat Me Like A Man” (which Michael also produced on The Dramatics).
  • Stellar liner notes by Billboard senior editor Gail Mitchell include extensive quotes and track-by-track commentary from Michael; and first class remastering (Donald Cleveland) and artwork (Roger Williams).

This 37-track collection includes the entire 10-track 1983 LP, “One Mother To Another,” only ever released in Europe and making its’ worldwide CD debut. In addition, six tracks that were recorded for the group’s first RCA LP (in 1972) and only issued on a now out-of-print US CD in 2010 are also included here along with the team’s four charted singles, recorded for Epic Records during their seven-year tenure with the label, other standouts such as “Somebody To Love,” (produced by Jimmy Iovine) along with “U Turn Me On” and “Evolution” from the 1981 LP, “Iron Age” and key cuts from the group’s three Epic studio albums such as “Give You All The Love (Inside Of Me)” and a cover of the Motown classic, “Mickey’s Monkey.”

• Formed in 1970 originally by vocalists Glenn Murdock and Joyce Kennedy, the band expanded with a nucleus that included guitarist Gary ‘Mo’ Moore and bassist Jerry ‘Wyzard’ Seay.   Establishing themselves instantly as a multi-ethnic band that crossed the musical boundaries of rock, pop and R&B, Mother’s Finest were as comfortable on shows with The Who, AC/DC and Black Sabbath as with Parliament/Funkadelic, The Commodores and Ohio Players. The group began achieving chart success in 1976 with “Dontcha Wanna Love Me,” scoring their biggest US pop hit with “Baby Love” and following it with the now-soul classic R&B chartmaker, Love Changes” (written and produced by Skip Scarborough) in 1978.

• Extensive stellar liner notes by renowned US writer A. Scott Galloway including quotes from original members of the group including Glenn, Joyce, Gary and Jerry; and excellent mastering by Nick Robbins.

• Formed by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, two former members of the touring band for the legendary Miles Davis, the group known as Mtume emerged after the pair’s stint with on the road and in the studio with Roberta Flack, who had recorded one of their songs, “The Closer I Get To You” as a duet with Donny Hathaway.

• Signed to Epic Records, the original line-up included other Flack alumni, drummer Howard King, bassist Basil Fearington, keyboardist Hubert Eaves III, with Reggie on guitar, Mtume on percussion, congas and lead vocals and Tawatha (who first began working with Mtume & Lucas a few years earlier) on lead and background vocals.

• With Mtume & Lucas (who went on to work successfully with Stephanie Mills and Phyllis Hyman among others) originally writing and producing, the group’s first two albums included such gems as “Love Lock” (popular with UK smooth groove lovers), the Top 20 R&B hit “Give It On Up (If You Want To),” “So You Wanna Be A Star” and soulful ballads such as “Closer To The End” and “Everything Good To Me.” After an amicable split in 1982 with Lucas, Mtume underwent personnel changes and emerged with the suggestive “Juicy Fruit,” the band’s biggest hit single and best-selling album, continuing to record three more LPs.

• Included on this stellar anthology (compiled by longtime Mtume band friend David Nathan who also wrote the notes with quotes from James Mtume, Reggie Lucas and Tawatha) is a specially-sequenced ‘mini-opera’ drawn from tracks recorded for 1984’s “You, Me And He” LP, with the rare non-album cut “It’s Non-Functional” making its CD debut along with the A&G mix of the 1986 charted single, “Breathless.” Three tracks from Tawatha include the six-minute “Thigh High Mix” of the single, “Thigh Ride.”

  • SoulMusic Records is proud to present an expanded edition of I’M READY, the sole album recorded by the late and legendary Natalie Cole for Epic Records. The original eight-track 1983 album is supplemented by four cuts produced by famed musician Stanley Clarke which remained in the vaults until they were included in a ‘90s U.S. reissue of the original LP.
  • Following her hit-filled tenure with Capitol Records (1975-1982), Natalie’s move to Epic came among personal challenges (outlined in her 2000 memoirs). Nonetheless, I’M READY saw her reunited with the team of Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy who had helmed her ‘70s string of award-winning best-selling singles and album for five tracks including “Too Much Mister,” a Top US R&B hit.  Multi-talented music man Stanley Clarke produced three tracks, co-producing one with a member of Natalie’s band, Chuck Bynum.
  • Natalie (who sadly passed away on December 31, 2015) wrote two songs – “I’m Your Mirror” and the bonus cut “How Can You Stop” – as well as co-writing two more with her brother Eddie Cole, and “Winner (Takes All)” and “Movin’ On,” which were also part of the Stanley Clarke sessions.
  • Remastered by Nick Robbins, this 2016 SoulMusic Records reissue follows the label’s release of two other Cole classics, “Natalie…Live!” (SMCR-5009) and “Thankful,” an expanded edition (SMCR-5028) and includes insightful notes by renowned U.S. writer Justin Kantor and a personal tribute to Natalie by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan, who began interviewing her in 1975.

Covering almost a decade (1972-1981), the 34 tracks include all of Norman’s ten US charted singles; a rare 12” mix of the 1977 cut, “Captain Connors”; two tracks from the album, “Norman Connors Presents Aquarian Dream” (including one, ‘Once Again,” featuring Gloria Jones); key album cuts, “Dindi” and “Maiden Voyage” and a musical feast of tracks featuring a number of artists who first gained prominence through their recordings with Norman such as Jean Carn, Michael Henderson, Phyllis Hyman, Prince Phillip Mitchell, Eleanore Mills, Al Johnson, Adaritha, Glenn Jones and Beau Williams.

• Before he became known as a premier music man with ‘golden ears’ (for his discovery of so many great vocalists), the Philadelphia drummer served his musical apprenticeship with John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders before embarking on his own recording career in 1972. By 1975, Connors had achieved his first chart breakthrough thanks to the soulful pairing of Carn and Henderson on the now-classic “Valentine Love.”

• During the ensuing years, Connors gave a then-unknown Phyllis Hyman her first taste of international success with her recording of “Betcha By Golly Wow” as well as giving R&B vocalist Glenn Jones his initial hit in 1980 with “Melancholy Fire.” Other standouts on this superb 2-CD set include Connors’ favourites such as “You Are My Starship” (Michael Henderson’s first solo hit), “Once I’ve Been There,” “This Is Your Life,” “Wouldn’t You Like To See” and “I Don’t Need Nobody Else.”

  • SoulMusic Records is proud to present expanded editions of RESTLESS and SENSATIONAL, two best-selling ‘80s albums by popular US R&B band Starpoint as a 2-CD set with (9) bonus tracks.

Starpoint began as a Maryland-based family group consisting of brothers George, Ernesto, Orlando and Gregory Phillips with the early addition of Kayode ‘Ky’ Adeyemo and in the late ‘70s, female vocalist Renee Diggs. The group secured their first recording contract in 1980 with Chocolate City Records, moving to Casablanca and then Boardwalk, establishing a presence on the US R&B charts before signing with Elektra Records in 1984.  The group’s first LP for the label “It’s All Yours” set them on a path to consistent status that lasted for almost six years.

RESTLESS, Starpoint’s sophomore 1985 Elektra set was co-produced by manager Lionel Job and then-emerging hit producer Keith Diamond and boasted (3) Top 10 R&B/dance hits including the now-classic “Object Of My Desire” (their biggest US pop charted single), the LP’s infectious title track and “What You Been Missin.”

With energetic live performances, Starpoint toured with Morris Day, Luther Vandross and Atlantic Starr and others, building a solid audience: their third Elektra album, SENSATIONAL (produced by renowned music man/songwriter Preston Glass and Job) continued the momentum with “He Wants My Body” and “D.Y.B.O”; Diggs’ diagnosis with multiple sclerosis sadly impacted continued touring and in 1990, Starpoint disbanded.

This reissue includes stellar notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with quotes from Orlando Phillips, Lionel Job and Preston Glass and great remastering by Donald Cleveland.

Moving to Columbia Records in 1973, The Manhattans began a run of hit singles and best-selling albums that started with the classic ballad, “There’s No Me Without You” and ended 1979’s upbeat “All I Need.” Disc 1 of this very satisfying anthology traces the group’s stellar work primarily with Philadelphia soul producer Bobby Martin and includes the No. 1 international hit, “Kiss And Say Goodbye” along with amazing ballads such as “It Feels So Good To Be Loved By You,” “We Never Danced To A Love Song” and “I Kinda Miss You.”  Other standouts include the group’s version of Billy Joel’s “Everybody Has A Dream,” “Here Comes The Hurt Again” and a medley of “The Way We Were” with The Temptations’ “Memories.”

Disc 2 focuses on the group’s work with various producers including Chicago-based Leo Graham, responsible for the massive hit “Shining Star”; Morrie Brown who provided “Crazy,” a US and UK charted hit; and soul legend Bobby Womack who produced “Where Did We Go Wrong” featuring future hitmaker, Regina Belle. Highlights also include the original of Sam Dees’ “Just The Lonely Talking Again” (later a hit for Whitney Houston) and the hidden gem, “Cloudy, With A Chance Of Tears.”

Extensive liner notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring include quotes from group members; with excellent mastering by Nick Robbins.
