When SoulMusic.com's contributors were asked to submit their thoughts about what was the best of 2011, my response was to, instead, express just how important our work is, in regard to capturing the many voices - both spoken and sung - of soul music, both past and present.
This year started off with the passing of a music icon - Mary Christine Brockert, best known to the world as Teena Marie. It ends with the transition of singer Dobie Gray, as well as the tragic murder of music executive John Attenberry. Now, I understand what some of y'all are saying – “jeez, Kev … you sure know how to dampen a party ..." So, why am I pointing this out?
It's simple. While Teena's life has been documented in many ways, including TV-One's excellent series, "Unsung," there are still many more folks who have made contributions to the genre, and their stories have yet to be told. For example, I recently had a great phone conversation with William "Sonny" Sanders, the legendary arranger/composer behind many classics, such as "Soulful Strut" (a/k/a "Am I The Same Girl"), and Aretha's "Angel." While he appreciates the recognition he has received in the past, Mr. Sanders' back-story, which stretches from his work at Motown to his well-timed move to the Windy City, has yet to be documented. And he's not the only one.
That is where we at SoulMusic.com step in: Thanks to the revision of the website, that will allow us contributors to add content on a steady and even more consistent basis. Also, founder David Nathan has asked the staff to make recommendations for future interviews and features, which, hopefully, will mean more great stories to come from those who have made soul music the most beloved genre of listeners around the world.
I look forward to conducting more interviews, and to authoring liner notes for reissues as we roll into 2012, and hope my colleagues here feel the same. Here's to 2011, and to those who made this year (and years past) the most soulful. Onward to January 1st....
Respectfully submitted,
Kevin L. Goins a/k/a The Soul Ninja
