Musiq Soulchild: On My Radio CD (Atlantic) Review
Musiq Soulchild is the Phillip Seymour Hoffman of R&B artists. He’s not a sex symbol or superstar but year in, year out he can be relied upon to deliver quality, unpretentious, heartfelt material that tends to rise effortlessly above the masses. In the process he has garnered the respect and admiration of the public and his peers alike. This latest collection is no exception.
Highlights on this unashamedly soulful, melodic collection include a triumvirate of old school, well written soul ballads, “Love Of My Love” with it’s interesting chord changes, “Someone” and “Deserve You More”. Let’s not forget the infectious single, “If You Leave” with Mary J. Blige.
It’s hard to find a dud track (perhaps the last song, the clichéd hip- hop produced “Radio” could be it) on here. Also enjoyable are the more uptempo outings, in particular, the reggae infused “I Wanna Be” with Damian Marley and the meaty, old school hip-hop vibe of “Special”.
Another strong selection from Musiq Soulchild, who by now, surely has graduated to being a bona fide soul man.
