| DAVID NATHAN'S SHOW AT CATALINA'S BAR & GRILL, HOLLYWOOD, SEPT 15, 2003 With Thelma Jones Photos by Alan Mercer, www.alanmercer.com Paula Edelstein, noted critic and music journalist's reviewe for Sounds Of Timeless Jazz.com: “Singing such great songs as “Angel Eyes,” “Runnin’ Out Of Fools,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” and one outstanding rendition of “Cry Me A River,” (which he sang in an uptempo Brazilian bossa nova jazz rhythm), Nathan gave the audience a taste of his soulful grooves that had some folk’s heads bopping, hands waving, and bodies swaying in their chairs! At one point, vocalists Thelma Jones and Susaye Greene joined him onstage to sing harmony and background on “Walk On By” allowing the audience to be exposed to their fresh, innovative voices that had emerged out of the soul tradition in the 70s. In a complete about face, Nathan launched into a blues laden “Drink Muddy Water” and later pulled off a moving tribute to Little Esther Phillips with “I Could Have Told You So.” David Nathan’s musicality and interpretations were not only refreshingly new and different, but his choice of repertoire kept everyone interested. Overall, he and his accompanists offered an adventurous yet accessible set, and displayed strong musicianship and personality.” |
