DORIS TROY: You Got Me Baby (1979 Disco Version) (SoulMusic Records/Warner X)

Doris Troy-You Got Me Baby

Known to music lovers as the original recording artist and co-writer of the classic "Just One Look," R&B Foundation Pioneer Award recipient Doris Troy (1937-2004) - often known as 'Mama Soul' - primarily recorded for Atlantic Records in the '60s before working with The Beatles in the early '70s as one of the few U.S. artists signed to Apple Records.  Her voice could be heard on literally dozens of recordings by such artists as Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, George Harrison, Billy Preston and Cary Simon among others.  Doris' early years provided the inspiration for her sister Vy Higgensen's immensely popular musical, "Mama I Want To Sing!" and Doris performed for many years in the show playing the role of her own mother.

In 1979, she teamed up with longtime friend, British music journalist David Nathan and John Simmons, former member of R&B group The Reflections and at the time, musical director for Stephanie Mills to record in New York and one of the tracks cut is the original composition, "You Got Me Baby," co-written and co-produced by Nathan & Simmons.  The six-minute-plus disco version of the recording is making its digital debut via SoulMusic Records, with worldwide distribution by Warner X.  Original artwork: Roger Williams
